Hope is what the volunteer employees of Unilever in Morocco have committed to giving to the children of the orphanage "Dar el Atfale de Bernoussi”. And in line with the spirit of giving to others during Ramadan, Unilever Morocco has initiated the Ramadan of Hope project.
The orphanage
Located close to the Unilever office in Morocco, "Dar el Atfale de Bernoussi” is an orphanage with 295 residents; mainly abandoned children or those from poor families aged between 6-19 years.
While this orphanage does receive a small contribution towards its upkeep from the government, the amount is not adequate for the proper upkeep of the children. Especially their educational requirements. Keeping this in mind the aim of operation “Ramadan of hope” is to improve the every day life of these children and contribute to their pedagogical development while encouraging the employees to bring vitality alive in their work and personal lives by participating to this program.
Ramadan of hope
Throughout the month of Ramadan, employees have been invited to organize an educational activity with the children every day : Drawing workshops, Karaoké and singing, cooking and baking, awareness session to promote dental hygiene and free dental screening, reading and learning the Quran, movie projections, painting workshops, English courses, Chess training session that will help to select and create a chess club in the orphanage are just a few of the activities that the employees have indulged in.
For children who face learning difficulties, some volunteers have committed their time for at least one school year (Sept ‘09- Oct‘10). They will hold weekly sessions to help these children do their homework and to provide them with the educational support for their studies.
The success of these activities has encouraged the volunteers to organize other activities even after Ramadan.
This operation is part of a partnership that was signed by the MD of Unilever Maghreb Mr James Todd and the President of the Association of “Dar El Atfale de Bernoussi” Mr Said Sekkat and is valid for a period of one year & is renewable at the end of the year. This partnership includes also a monthly donation of Food and HPC products, the refurbishing and equipping of their canteen as well as the sponsor of their Football Team which participates in national tournament.
